Start your ultimate journey by heading for the cloud forests and tropical beaches of Costa Rica to explore a country rich in natural beauty and bio-diversity. Then, discover the American Southwest’s many treasures on a transformative journey with a focus on exhilarating adventures in nature and road-tripping through National Parks. You’ll create meaningful connections the whole way with the stunning terrain of the Americas as your backdrop.
The first leg of your experience combines outdoor exploration and cross-cultural adventure in the heart of Central America. Experience Shabbat with the local community, search for jungle wildlife on a nighttime safari, and explore your Jewish identity through the lens of life in Costa Rica.
From there, you’ll get the opportunity to become one with nature, tour bustling cities, and experience beautiful sunsets across the American West. Exploring the rich history of Arizona and the vast landscape of California is sure to be a memory you will hold onto forever. On this trek, you will participate in service projects, be a part of unique Shabbat experiences, and connect with Jewish teens from across the nation.
ELEMENTS OF THE EXPERIENCE
The Must-Sees and the Hidden Gems | Ultimate Americas Trek covers all of the must-see highlights of Costa Rica and the American West—San Jose, the Tarcoles River, the lush coastal beaches, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, Hollywood, and Malibu Beach. We also make time for more off-the-beaten-path experiences like a nighttime safari, hiking up an active volcano, walking through a redwood forest, and kayaking on Lake Tahoe.
Once-in-a-Lifetime Outdoor Adventures | Embrace the adrenaline rush in Costa Rica. You’ll zip-line over a rainforest, snorkel on a tropical beach, raft down a raging river, swim under a waterfall, relax in thermal hot springs, and go on a night safari. From there, turn your heart and eyes to wide-open spaces and stunning national parkland in the American West. Live the great outdoors by hiking to the base of Half Dome in Yosemite, exploring Sedona and Slide Rock State Park, and descend deep into the Grand Canyon. See sides of nature that you have only dreamed about, and challenge yourself along the way.
Living Jewish Values | As a BBYO Passport experience, Ultimate Americas Trek is also an opportunity to explore your Jewish identity in a new context. Delve into the meaning of being “eco-kosher,” fulfill the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), and celebrate Shabbat in new and different ways with local Jewish communities during both legs of the trip.
IS IT RIGHT FOR ME?
While Ultimate Americas Trek is designed for active teens, the program is appropriate for most. Do not worry about needing to be super outdoorsy to enjoy yourself. The outdoor activities are only meant to complement the overall touring (most of which is still bus-based). The aim of Ultimate Americas Trek is to provide teens with a more active way to experience this region through the beauty of its terrain. See you on the trails!
